Putting Our Best Foot Forward to Keep Our Learning Communities Healthy
With recent news about increasing measles cases in Canada, parents will naturally wonder how best to protect their children. Although there are currently no confirmed measles cases at local schools in Canadian Rockies Public Schools, Alberta Health Services (AHS) encourages families to remain informed and prepared.
Measles, a highly contagious viral illness, is easily spread through coughing and sneezing. Early symptoms typically include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, followed by a distinct, blotchy rash. Though most recover fully, complications such as ear infections, pneumonia, or seizures can occur, particularly in younger children, pregnant individuals, or those with weakened immune systems.
AHS emphasizes vaccination as the most effective measure to protect against measles. Ensuring children receive two doses of the measles vaccine offers strong protection. Alberta provides these immunizations at no charge through the routine childhood vaccination program. Parents can conveniently verify their child’s vaccination status by contacting Health Link at 811 or their local community health centre. For individuals aged 14 and older, vaccination records are also available online through Alberta’s My Health Record.
CRPS schools remain vigilant and will work closely and collaboratively with AHS Public Health if the disease should further spread. Working together, our best line of defense is to ensure we remain informed and should a child show signs of measles, keep them home, limiting contact with others to prevent further spread. Rather than immediately visiting a clinic or emergency room, parents are advised to first call Health Link at 811 for guidance on safely accessing medical care.
Together, informed communities create safer, healthier spaces for children to learn and grow.
