One More Shot to Shine: Legacy Scholarship Deadline Extended to May 16

As the last few days of Spring Break draw to a close, students at Banff Community High School and Canmore Collegiate High School should take the opportunity to apply for the Board of Trustees Legacy Scholarship – now extended to May 16, 2025. This scholarship, created by the CRPS Board of Trustees, is more than financial support; it’s a celebration of student voice, character, and commitment to the broader world. Inspired by the mission to nurture both hearts and minds, the scholarship recognizes students who embody Alberta Education’s Student Competencies in meaningful, real-world ways.

These competencies—critical thinking, creativity, communication, global citizenship, and personal well-being—are the building blocks of future-ready learners. The Legacy Scholarship challenges students to reflect on how they live these values daily, whether through community involvement, innovation, teamwork, or quiet acts of leadership. With $5,000 in total funds awarded across each school, students have the chance to receive one of three scholarships per school to support post-secondary tuition, housing, apprenticeship costs, or other structured educational experiences. Funds are valid until September 2026, giving recipients ample flexibility to pursue their next steps.

Applying is straightforward. Students complete a short Google Form, submit a creative media piece—like a 500-word essay, podcast, or video—that brings their story to life, and include a letter of reference from someone who can speak to their contributions and character. For families without easy access to upload tools, CRPS staff are available to help. This process encourages students to take ownership of their learning journey, while giving parents and guardians a glimpse into the diverse ways young people grow, contribute, and lead.

This is also a chance for the community to lift up its youth. Scholarship recipients will be recognized at upcoming school awards ceremonies and highlighted in CRPS communications, including a media release and the division’s Annual Education Results Report. These moments not only reward effort but inspire others to step forward and share their stories too.

With the deadline approaching and spring around the corner, now is the time for students to reflect on what they’ve accomplished and how they’ve grown. The Legacy Scholarship is not just about where a student is going next, but about how they’ve chosen to show up today. The invitation is open. One thoughtful story could open a door.
