CRPS Board of Trustees Announces Legacy Scholarship to Empower Student Excellence
As the Canadian Rockies Public Schools (CRPS) Board of Trustees enters the final year of its 2021–2025 term, it is proud to announce the creation of the Board of Trustees Legacy Scholarship, a meaningful initiative to celebrate student achievements and leave a lasting impact on the CRPS community.
The Legacy Scholarship reflects the board’s mission to "inspire the hearts and minds of every student" and encourages high school students to embody Alberta Education’s Student Competencies, which includes critical thinking and problem solving, creativity and innovation, communication and collaboration, cultural and global citizenship, and personal growth and well-being. The scholarship aims to empower students as they prepare for post-secondary education, apprenticeships, or other educational opportunities.
“This scholarship is about recognizing the incredible potential of our students,” said Brian Callaghan, CRPS Board Chair. “It aligns with everything we stand for as a board - supporting our learners to become well-rounded individuals who can make meaningful contributions to their communities and the world.”
The scholarship will provide a total of $5,000 for the 2024/25 school year, divided equally between Banff Community High School and Canmore Collegiate High School. Each school will award one $1,250 scholarship, one $750 scholarship, and one $500 scholarship to eligible Grade 11 or 12 students. Recipients can use the funds for tuition, housing, or other structured educational pursuits, with the flexibility to use the scholarship funds through to September 2026.
Applications open on Nov. 27, 2024, and close on April 11, 2025. Students are encouraged to submit a media piece—such as an essay, video, or podcast—that demonstrates how they apply Alberta Education’s Student Competencies in real-world settings. A letter of reference from a teacher, mentor, or community leader is also required.
Brian Callaghan emphasized the inclusive and holistic nature of the selection process, which will be managed by a committee of CRPS trustees, a senior administrator, and a school council representative. “This initiative is about more than academic achievement - it’s about celebrating the diverse strengths and talents of our students. We’ve ensured the process is fair and accessible to give every eligible student the chance to shine.”
Scholarship recipients will be recognized at their school’s awards ceremony and highlighted in a formal media release and in CRPS 2024/25 Annual Education Results Report, released next November. These celebrations will shine a spotlight on the inspiring contributions of CRPS students and the board’s ongoing commitment to excellence in education.
“As we approach the end of our term, this scholarship represents our legacy as a board and our unwavering belief in the transformative power of education,” Callaghan said. “It is our hope that this initiative will continue to inspire students long after our term concludes.”
