Student Wellness Symposium Kicks Off CRPS Journey Toward Healthy School Certification
On Oct. 16, 2024, Canadian Rockies Public Schools (CRPS) students from Gr. 7 to 12 gathered at the Rocky Mountain Resort in Banff for a day of collaboration and leadership during its inaugural Student Wellness Symposium. Hosted in partnership with Ever Active Schools, the symposium served as the launching point for the division’s journey toward achieving Healthy School Certification, a program designed to foster student wellness in schools through a comprehensive, student-led approach.
Throughout the day, students engaged in thoughtful discussions, reviewing data on school wellness issues such as physical health, mental health, anxiety, and depression. With guidance from wellness champions the students brainstormed ideas to address these challenges and began drafting action plans that will be refined and implemented over the coming months.
Interactive activities like the Charades Relay and Sophie's Tower ensured the symposium wasn’t all about planning—students also had the opportunity to connect with their peers through physical wellness games. This combination of collaboration, critical thinking, and fun helped students build strong foundations for their wellness initiatives while fostering a sense of community across schools.
“The event was designed to foster student leadership and communication,” said CRPS’ Director of Learning Services Mike Shoemaker. “Students worked together across grade levels and schools, with younger students speaking publicly and interacting with older students. Activities, such as charades, helped break the ice and encourage participation. Although some students were initially shy, they became more comfortable throughout the day.”
Each school left the symposium with a clear set of goals for their wellness action plans. For example, Banff Community High School students are focusing on increasing their sense of safety and access to mental health resources. Canmore Collegiate High School is emphasizing school spirit, sports participation, and creative arts, while Lawrence Grassi Middle School is prioritizing the happiness and safety of their students. These action plans are just the beginning—students will continue to refine their ideas and work closely with their wellness champions and school administrators to bring these initiatives to life.
CRPS is not embarking on this wellness journey alone. Ever Active Schools and Alberta Health Services - Healthy Schools Team are key partners in guiding and supporting students as they navigate the certification process. These organizations provide valuable resources and expertise, helping schools implement their action plans and sustain momentum throughout the year.
As the year progresses, CRPS will spotlight the incredible efforts of students through regular updates on the division’s website. From showcasing inspiring stories of student leadership to celebrating successes at each certification level, CRPS is committed to amplifying the voices of its students and recognizing the positive impact they are having on their school communities.
The Healthy School Certification is more than a program—it’s a movement that empowers students to take charge of their health and well-being. By prioritizing wellness, CRPS is fostering a culture of care, collaboration, and leadership that will resonate across the school division for years to come. As students lead the way, they are not just improving their schools; they are building a foundation for healthier, happier futures.
Keep an eye on our website for updates throughout the year as CRPS students continue their journey toward wellness certification, one step at a time.
