Setting the Stage: How CRPS Teachers Establish Positive Classroom Expectations from Day One

Canadian Rockies Public Schools (CRPS) is thrilled to welcome students back to school on August 26, and we're equally excited to lay the groundwork for positive behavioural expectations from day one. Setting these expectations early not only establishes a conducive learning environment but also ensures that students understand the values and conduct expected within their classrooms.

From the outset, students benefit when teachers introduce three to five clear behavioural expectations, using positive language to foster an atmosphere of mutual respect and cooperation. When visibly posted in the classroom and revisited regularly, these rules serve as a constant reminder of the standards to which everyone is held accountable. Such clarity not only enhances the learning environment but also provides students with a sense of security and reduces classroom stress.

Each set of expectations is tailored slightly to fit the specific classroom dynamics but aligns with the school-wide beliefs and understandings, creating a cohesive and supportive environment across all grades. Examples might include respecting others, being responsible for one’s actions, and contributing positively to class discussions. Teachers also are asked to take the time to explain why these behaviours are important, helping students see the value in what they are asked to do.

To make these concepts concrete, teachers may engage students in activities like creating a T-chart to visualize what appropriate behaviour looks like, sounds like, and feels like. For instance, listening attentively involves having eyes on the speaker, quiet hands, and a closed mouth, making the speaker feel respected and valued. For younger students, learning about expectations can be interactive and visual. They might draw pictures of desired behaviours and present them to the class, which not only reinforces the learning but also makes it enjoyable and memorable.

Clear behavioural expectations facilitate better communication with parents and other staff, including substitutes, ensuring everyone is informed and consistent in their approaches. This transparency allows for a more unified and supportive community, where students can thrive academically and socially.

As we embark on this new school year, embracing these practices will not only increase academic learning time but also enable students to self-monitor and adjust their behaviours, ensuring they are contributing positively to their vibrant school community.
