Heart Mountain Painting Inspires Unity at Exshaw School

Exshaw School is embracing a renewed spirit of inclusivity and community with the unveiling of a stunning painting by Stoney Nakoda artist Gordon Wesley. This breathtaking artwork, now prominently displayed at the school's main entrance, captures the iconic view of Heart Mountain, a natural landmark that symbolizes the school's deep connection to the Bow Valley. The painting serves as a powerful visual anchor, reminding all who enter of the school’s commitment to honouring the land and the cultures that have shaped the community.

The lower section of the painting introduces Exshaw School’s newly adopted House Team animals—eagle, bear, turtle, and bison—each of which represents values such as leadership, courage, strength, and wisdom. These values are not just symbolic; they are central to the school community and have been woven into the fabric of the school’s culture through the House Teams initiative.

As a pioneer of the House Team model in the Division, Exshaw’s small, cross-age grouping encourages students to support and learn from one another, much like members of a family. Through activities such as nature walks, cultural storytelling, and community service projects, students not only embody the qualities of their House animals but also build strong connections to the environment, each other, and the wider community.

The House Teams also serve as a platform for students to engage with Indigenous knowledge and traditions. Knowledge Keepers are involved in guiding the teams, helping students understand the importance of relationships, history, and cultural respect.

Together, the new art piece and the House Teams program create a vibrant and supportive learning environment, inviting families to engage and actively support their children’s educational journey. This visual masterpiece not only enhances the school's environment but also reinforces the values that guide and inspire students daily, ensuring that the spirit of unity and inclusivity is felt throughout the entire Exshaw School community.
