Empowering Student Voice at Lawrence Grassi Middle School
At Lawrence Grassi Middle School (LGMS), cultivating a positive, inclusive culture is more than a goal - it’s a daily commitment. The school’s Student Senate plays an essential role in this vision, amplifying student voices and fostering a strong sense of belonging. Initially established in 2022/23, the senate has quickly become the heartbeat of LGMS, where real conversations lead to meaningful actions that have enriched the school community.
With a commitment to openness and respect, LGMS’ Student Senate has made it possible for students to bring forward ideas and challenges, knowing they will be genuinely considered. A primary example of this student-centered culture is the “Terrific Trailblazers” program, which celebrates acts of kindness, respect, and inclusivity. Students recognized as “Trailblazers” receive recognition slips for positive acts, with the chance to win small prizes - a small gesture that has made a big impact. As Principal Kelly Proudfoot shared, “The Trailblazer program was a direct response to students wanting to see kindness acknowledged and celebrated in the school. It’s a small act with a big impact, and it aligns perfectly with our commitment to fostering a respectful and supportive community.”
The senate’s voice also has led to the organization of beloved school-wide events that build connections among students. Spirit Week, for example, provides a week of themed days where students build community by participating in friendly competitions and enjoying shared experiences. Events like these make the school environment lively and fun, allowing students to express themselves and build friendships across grade levels. Additionally, the senate has played a key role in fostering student-led clubs, allowing students to explore interests and build leadership skills. One shining example is the Green Team, originally focused on composting but now an active environmental club that manages a hydroponic garden project in the school library.
Beyond organizing events and spearheading clubs, the senate has taken strides to improve LGMS’ physical spaces to support student well-being. In previous years, they suggested ways to reduce hallway crowding by reconfiguring traffic flow, which created a more welcoming environment. More recently, they are preparing a blueprint to improve restroom privacy, an initiative driven by a desire to enhance psychological safety for all students.
Safety and inclusivity remain core priorities for the senate. Collaborating with the school’s student wellness committee, senate members introduced an anonymous reporting box, allowing students to voice concerns discreetly. This initiative reflects LGMS’ commitment to creating a safe environment where students can confidently address challenges they encounter.
The most enduring impact of the senate’s work is the culture of open communication and shared responsibility it has nurtured. Today, LGMS students feel more empowered to voice their ideas and bring forward meaningful change.
“Through the Student Senate, our students have discovered the power of their own voices to influence change,” shared Proudfoot. “As part of its evolution, students are not only bringing forward ideas to improve their daily experiences but are also engaging in thoughtful discussions about how their actions shape the community and have begun to address larger issues, such as the need for career planning and the importance of strong female role models.”
As this year’s Student Senate passes the torch, they leave behind a stronger, more connected school community. The impact of their student-led growth will continue to enrich LGMS for years to come, serving as a legacy of empowered voices and a school culture that values every student’s contribution.
