Back to School Safety: A Reminder for Drivers in School Zones and Around Buses

With Canadian Rockies Public Schools (CRPS) students now back in school, it is crucial for drivers to exercise heightened caution in school zones and around school buses. The start of a new school year brings an increase in young pedestrians, many of whom might be distracted by the excitement of a new school year and less aware of their surroundings.

Drivers play a critical role in ensuring the safety of these students. School zones are designed to protect children by slowing down traffic and reducing the risk of accidents. In these areas, it is imperative that drivers are extra vigilant and adhere to the posted speed limits, which are 30 km/h unless indicated otherwise.

The presence of school buses adds another layer of responsibility for drivers. CRPS buses use flashing lights as signals to other motorists. Alternating flashing amber lights indicate that a bus is preparing to stop to either pick up or drop off students. It is essential that drivers recognize this signal and prepare to halt. When a bus activates its alternating flashing red lights, it is a legal requirement for drivers in both directions to stop—unless the roadway is divided by a physical median. This pause creates a safety zone for children crossing the street to and from the bus.

Additionally, even when lights are not flashing, motorists should remain cautious around school buses, always prepared for the unexpected presence of children entering or exiting a bus. Failing to stop for a school bus with its red lights flashing results in severe penalties, including a fine of $567 and six demerit points, underscoring the seriousness of these regulations.

Urban areas, where about 90 per cent of school bus-related collisions occur, require particular attention. Moreover, passing another vehicle in the same direction within a school zone when it is in effect is strictly prohibited, reinforcing the need for full attention and reduced speeds.

As the school year progresses, let us all commit to keeping our youngest Bow Valley members safe. Vigilance, adherence to traffic laws, and a general awareness of the bustling school environment can prevent accidents and ensure that children have a safe and enjoyable school year.
